The industry group ChiroTrust notes that sleep disorders affect about 1.5 million Americans every year. The sleep loss is no joke Рit costs about $16 billion per year in medical costs, not including costs related to decreased employee productivity and other factors.

Not getting proper sleep can harm your work, your social life, your driving skills and your quality of life. Sleep problems often lead to serious health issues – even a reduced life expectancy.

In all, there are more than 80 known sleep disorders – insomnia ranks atop the list. This is when it is difficult to fall asleep – and stay asleep. Other disorders are sleep apnea, which is interrupted breathing while you slumber, and restless-leg syndrome. Narcolepsy, whose sufferers often endure attacks in which they fall asleep at any time, is another serious sleep disorder.

Your body needs the proper amount of sleep to function properly. That amount changes as we get older. Babies require nine to 10 hours of sleep during the night and an additional three or more hours of napping.

Toddlers also require about nine hours per night, but two to three hours or less of daytime naps. School kids need about nine to 11 hours of sleep nightly. Adults typically require about seven or eight hours.

When we are sleep-deprived, day napping goes up and there is the need for more sleep during the night. If we do not settle into established sleep cycles, or when normal cycles are broken, long-term sleep and health issues can develop.

Missing just an hour or two of sleep each night can be bad news for your health. While many people brag about their ability to get by on minimal sleep, research shows they are less able to perform complex mental tasks than those who get seven hours of sleep per night. Higher mortality rates are associated with long-term poor sleeping habits.

At Lakeside Sports Chiropractic, we can help you deal with sleep-related problems.

Spinal manipulation, supplements in your diet, relaxation measures and massage therapy can all be used to help you fall asleep faster and sleep through to the morning.

Some sleep improvement tips include:

  • Adhering to a regular schedule
  • Relaxing mentally and physically before bed
  • Getting regular exercise before you prepare for bed. A few hours before bed is often the best time to exercise and get a better night’s sleep.
  • Stay away from alcohol, caffeine and nicotine

Some therapy techniques you can use are music therapy or using sound machines at night. Wearing nasal strips can help if you have breathing conditions that keep you awake.

So if you are having difficulty falling asleep, and it’s beginning to impact your life, contact Lakeside Sports Chiropractic today to learn how we can help!
