Chiropractic physicians treat disorders of the musculoskeletal system including back and joint pain. They do not use drugs in their treatments, but they do advocate a hands-on approach. Chiropractors examine, diagnose and treat their patients.

The most common procedure a chiropractor performs is called spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustment. It is done to relieve pain and/or restore mobility to a joint or joints.

During the procedure, the chiropractor will have the patient lie in a given position, usually face-down. After the patient is properly positioned, the chiropractor will manually apply a sudden but controlled force to the targeted joint and push it beyond its current range of motion. The patient may hear cracking or popping noises as the chiropractor moves the joints around.

The chiropractor may recommend other treatments in conjunction with chiropractic. These can include exercise, weight loss, massage, stretching, heat or ice.

How does chiropractic care help people?

Chiropractic care can help anybody, not just the older adults who are most likely to use it. Even infants can benefit from chiropractic treatments. A chiropractor working with a baby will gently massage the child. The treatments will help the baby sleep and eat better.

Chiropractic care can also help small children. In 2012, The Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics described a study showing that chiropractic reduced colic symptoms in children. Other studies indicate that chiropractic can also be used to treat children suffering from ear infections or acid reflux.

Teenagers are notorious for developing poor posture, and chiropractic treatments can help them improve their posture. Teen-agers who play sports will benefit from chiropractic treatments. In addition to treating pain caused by injuries, chiropractic can reduce inflammation, boost the immune system, relax the muscles, and improve breathing.

Most chiropractic patients are adults who develop pain because of sedentary habits, poor posture, and too many hours in the office. Chiropractic care can help relieve and even prevent pain, including headaches, low-back pain, and sciatica. Many doctors recommend that a back patient try chiropractic before undergoing surgery. Studies have shown that chiropractic can help bring a patient’s blood pressure to normal levels, whether they have high or low blood pressure.

Chiropractic treatments can also help senior citizens. As people age, their joints stiffen, and one of the main benefits of chiropractic is the alleviation of joint pain. Chiropractic can also restore mobility to joints. At least one study has shown that chiropractic is an effective treatment for frozen shoulder. Treating the joints to keep them mobile and pain-free will help a senior keep their balance and prevent falls.

Joint and back problems can afflict anybody of any age. Chiropractic treatments can thus benefit everybody in the family.
